I had a pretty eventful day today--I watched storms popping up on the radar all day with the intention of grabbing a good one about sunset if one came up, but they were all too far to the north or south of me.

One popped up about 2 hours or so before sunset--it was a bit of a drive to get to it as it was several miles north of Sturgis--about 30 miles west, but according to the radar it was moving towards where I wanted to be to shoot so, I burned rubber to get there hoping the storm would a) be around Bear Butte State Park so I could incorporate the mountain into a shot and b) not peter out before I got there :eager:

The storm was still pretty active lightning-wise when I got there, but it hadn't advanced as far as I thought so I went a few miles north of Bear Butte and set up along the road (not the best position for lightning shots. I was right under two intersecting electrical transmission lines :XD:)

Anyway, I spent about an hour shooting the really cool sunset colors and managed to grab a couple of lightning shots in the process

I've cropped this shot by about 1/3 and adjusted the levels. I used two Cokin ND filters stacked to lower the light intensity of the sky. The colors are as you see them--I've made no color adjustments.

Yes, it was  It was the most beautiful color of royal purple I'd ever seen. I do believe the ND filters intensified it a bit though. the sky as I saw it was almost metallic purple--I wished it would have transferred to the shot like that.

Thanks Steve :thaks:

You certainly put in a lot of time storm chasing, John.

This is a spectacular result.

(How long does the season last?)

Thank you Alec :)
This is the only year so far that I've been able to chase so many ;) Mainly due to not having to work.

Our storm season will go right up into late August--the closer to the end of August the less thunderstorms we'll have though. right now is about peak season
