Sheridan Lake during the Persied Meteor Shower--No, I didn't capture any meteor in this image. Several did cross the frame, but they were too faint to record :(

It was a lovely night anyway--stargazing has an amazing power to center me. I'm more relaxed now than I have been in several weeks. I did get a couple of images with meteors in them--pretty faint, but still...I'll post them later.

The colors you see in this is a product of light pollution from Rapid City 25 miles to the northeast. Personally, I like the soft colors. I found it really interesting that the really bright star that made the trail near the 'V' in the hills was bright enough to reflect on the water.

By The way--those floating docks are NOT good places to try to shoot long exposures (or anything) from :XD: I very nearly went swimming after trying that very thing

Thank you for looking, commenting and faving :thanks:

Am I reading the shutter speed correctly... 710 seconds?
Lovely shot. I have yet to get any good night shots, because the weather has been so cruddy lately.

You are certainly reading the shotter speed correctly  I don't know why Nikon does that, but they do  I know what you mean about the cruddy weather :snowing: Got out the last two thursdays tough for a while

Lovely composition.
How many seconds of exposure? And how do you get such a sharp composition with a long exposure?
Even if I use tripods, remote and ISO 200 I still get some noise...

Great job.

Thank you :) (sorry it took me so long to reply)

the exposure was 710 seconds or about 11 and 3/4 minutes. I use a wireless remote to trigger the shutter open and closed. It is a single exposure and not a stacked image. It does have some noise--I forgot to run it through my noise reduction program before posting.

You'll always have some noise in single long exposures but especially if you're shooting towards a man made light source I've found. Moonlight really doesn't produce that much noise.

About the only way to really reduce noise is to stack images in Photoshop--there is a free software that allows you to stack many shorter length exposure--like 30 seconds-- along with a longer base image of around 3 minutes or so together and make the star trails. In fact there are 2 different free softwares you can look at--this one might be a pretty good option as it is truly free [link] and then theres this one that will allow you to make 10 images at a fairly low resolution before 'registering' the software for $17 U.S. [link] Both are pretty good softwares and will allow you to really reduce the amount of noise in your captures. Like anything it will take some learning and practice.

I hope that helps you :) Good luck in your night time endeavours :star:

Thank you very much for your advice.
I will surely try those softwares and let you know.

Your work is brilliant and I really hope to learn a lot from you.
