I took a trip up to the Needles area of the Black Hills the other night. I left home about 10 PM and it took an hour to drive up there. It's not that far, only about 50 miles or so. I wanted to go now because the Forest Service closes the Needles Highway during the winter months.

While I was there, I made 3 pictures before my battery died. This is the best of them, I think. There was no moon and it was totally still. I was there for the better part of the night and saw no one. It felt good to just marvel at the sky while the exposures ran.

I haven't seen that many stars in ages. I haven't really looked. I'm ashamed that I don't take the time, but I made up for lost time that night as I leaned up against my van and took in what I've been missing.

I fed my soul and came home a much smaller man than I was before the experience.

Yup,yup! 20 minutes. I wanted to go longer, but I knew my battery was getting low at this point and it takes just as long to write the image to the card as it did to take it.

Give it a try  Focusing in the dark is a real challenge :D

Thank you for the comment and the fav! :handshake:

This is actually a great star trail shot. What ISO value did you use? It looks wonderful for such a long exposure, with close to no noise.

Also nice highlight on the rock : )
