against the head of a nail
through the flesh of the innocent
it does impale

a madman's temper
drives it home
wild-eyed and cursing,
bruising and splintering bone

constricting bonds
applied as a tourniquet
and hope fades
for any respite

eyes clenched shut
through wretched pain
violent images are
all that remain

anger seethes
as a spark ignites
a funeral pyre
of sacrilegious rites

smoky spirit
carried on a forlorn wind
to feel never again
the rage unpinned

now, distant nightmare sounds
again assail
the head of a hammer
against the head of a nail
800 Miles800 miles
2 tanks of gas
4,000 shifts in a seat
to ease the cramps
1,000,000 thoughts racing
through empty head
each and every one
importantly ignored

3 birds dodged
and one coyote
who didn’t
quite make it

a long days drive
to lay it all on the line
and hold nothing back
in the vineyard

800 miles to meet new people
some who traveled farther
real people
genuine people
who also laid it all on the line
and held nothing back

their moments were SIEZED!
verses floated on soft spring breezes
while wine flowed with relative ease
they left the stage in a
smoking ruin
as each person performed
their works of a lifetime
