Spearfish Falls by Corvidae65 Spearfish Falls by Corvidae65

Spearfish Falls in Spearfish Canyon South Dakota. Took me a while to find this falls even though it was an easy walk :slow:

I wanted to try out that new Hoya ND400 neutral density filter I bought last winter--this is a 30 second exposure in broad daylight. I made adjustments in Camera Raw.

I'm impressed with this filter  but I plan a return to this place soon and try some other angles and filter strengths. The creeks (there are 2 creeks here--the one flowing past is Spearfish Creek and the one making the waterfall is Little Spearfish Creek) are running fast and fairly deep right now due to all the rain we've gotten lately. When the creeks flows reduce I'm going across

Thanks for looking, commenting and faving :thanks:

Thank you Emily :) I agree about the color--not great light in that valley at any time of day. No sunrise light or sunset light can get to it. The falls are almost always in shadow and the trees and stream get a little. it's kind of a nightmare to shoot :frustrated: I'm going to try to get there this weekend for a night shoot under the full moon. The light will be more even then

The cascade is almost frozen, as if time had slowed.

How would the falls appear with a short exposure, I wonder?

I think the falls would look better with a shorter exposure, Alec. The water wouldn't be so silky. I plan to go back there later this summer

One of the most beautiful sunsets I ever saw was in Key West in 2005. I may never get back there but at least I have that one memory.

There are places out here that I would love to see

Having been there (stayed at the Holiday Inn) I can see why you'd stay in Key Largo. Maybe if I ever get there again that will be a place to see more of--that and Dry Tortuga  Of course, i could sleep all day and just enjoy every sunset from Mallory Square :relax: If you see a hick northerner dressed in sandals with white socks, shorts, T-shirt and suspenders that will be me  Stop by and say Hi :lmao:

THank you Andrea  Ebay is the place  The great thing is that this filter doesn't mess with colors like some others.

I have never used Ebay before, it's not me as much as it is my hubby... he doesn't like the whole transaction online thing, but I might just have to start turbo poking him again like I did with the wall

Thanks for the info!

Well, they can be got in other places too--Adorama probably stocks them or B&H. Generally, ebay is pretty safe--I have been burned in the past but I was as much at fault for that than the seller  I should have filed a claim and didn't get it done in time so I lost a good deal of money.

Paypal transactions are relatively safe too and items paid with Paypal on Ebay usually have a buyer protection on them in case the deal goes sour. I've literally done thousands of transactions on Ebay, both buying and selling and it's the first place I look for camera accessories. The Hoya filter I bought I got for about 1/4 the cost of retail and it was brand new. You have to do your homework though to use Ebay to your full benefit

Not trying to convince you or your hubby but in this economy it's time to come out of the dark ages and save some bucks  :D

Ur gonna love the long exposures. I need a battery grip with the extra battery cause when you start shooting 5-7min exposures you kill your battery fast.

I think you're right Chris  the ND 400 is uber cool 8-) Not quite as cool as that B+W ND 1000 you gots though ;)

A battery grip would be nice for sure  I have 3 batteries in lieu of one  Still long exposures eat up the battery life though

I have 1 battery. That tahquamenon shot i took a while back, i killed my battery in 8 shots. really could have used an extra few batteries.
