the bridge was just outside of town
and had a nice little creek running under it
twenty feet to the surface and a deep hole
that was full of trout and suckers and chub
fat and sassy and fun to catch
the bottom of the creek was sandy
the banks were low sloped and
grassy
talk about a kid magnet!
in the summer we went there to fish
and swim and dig in the sand and
look under rocks for crawfish to
scare the girls with
(more than a few made their way
into a sisters underwear drawer)
we jumped off the top rail of the bridge
into the deep water hole below
yelling:
GERONIMOOOOOoooo!!!
on the way to splashdown
over and over we’d jump
until Lenny broke his ankle
then the bridge was off-limits
to summer-starved boys
with nothing to look forward to now
except the dry pages of winter

Memories of summers past. The bridge is real and still attracts kids every summer--at least what kids are still left in that itty-bitty town.
The town constable erected a high chain link barrier at the jumping off place when a kid broke his neck after diving off head first into the hole a few years later.
